Social Media in business

Often companies have lagged behind when it comes to knowing how to take advantage of new technologies. In the early years of the World Wide Web in the mid and late nineties , many companies feared that employees spend too much time surfing the net idle , so tried to control access. While it was clear that some employees lost time on it , many quickly discovered how to deploy the power of the Internet to work better and soon became a highly valuable resource for research from the desktop itself , track competitors and conduct other corporate activities .

The latest technological innovation that has appeared in the workplace are social networks (Facebook , LinkedIn , Twitter, Ning, Xing, Plaxo, Hi5 and Second Life, etc.), which allow people to connect, communicate and share information a totally revolutionary and innovative way.

ITEMS

• The use of social networks at work by employees can potentially transform the workplace.
• Numerous well-known companies are taking advantage of the power of social media connectivity to improve productivity , innovation, collaboration, reputation and employee involvement.
• Recent data from Manpower Professional reveal that 75 % of employees stated that their companies do not have a formal policy on the use of social networks at work. This suggests that a large majority of companies are adopting the position of "wait and see what happens " before developing their own formal policies on the use of social networks .
• Leaders need to find ways to leverage the popularity and commercial value of social media to boost organizational performance and extend corporate objectives. But the focus of these efforts should not focus on trying to control the behavior of employees regarding social media, but to channel that use in a direction that benefits for businesses and employees alike.
